What's Included in a Fire Extinguisher Inspection?

Internal Maintenance
Internal Examination & Recharge  ·  Interval Varies by Type

NFPA 10 requires every extinguisher to be emptied, examined inside, and recharged on a schedule set by its agent and cylinder type. Island Fire & Safety can help coordinate this service. If your inspection turns up a unit that is due, we'll work through it with you. Pitts Enterprise handles the work, and we pass their cost straight through with no markup.

How often it is required
  • Every 3 years AFFF and FFFP foam
  • Every 5 years Stored-pressure water, CO2, wet chemical, and dry chemical in stainless steel shells
  • Every 6 years Dry chemical, halogenated agent, and dry powder in mild steel, brass, or aluminum shells
What is included
  • Full discharge and internal cylinder examination
  • Cleaning of valve, siphon tube, and discharge hose
  • O-ring, gasket, and spring replacement as needed
  • Recharge with correct extinguishing agent
  • Functional pressure test after reassembly
  • Verification-of-service collar and dated maintenance label
  • NFPA 10 compliant documentation for your compliance file

Hydrostatic Testing
Cylinder Integrity  ·  Every 5–12 Years

A pressure test that verifies the structural integrity of the cylinder itself. Required by NFPA 10 on a schedule set by agent and shell material. Island Fire & Safety can help coordinate this service. If a unit needs hydrostatic testing, we'll work through it with you. Pitts Enterprise handles the work, and we pass their cost straight through with no markup.

How often it is required
  • Every 5 years Stored-pressure water, AFFF and FFFP foam, CO2, wet chemical, and dry chemical in stainless steel shells
  • Every 12 years Dry chemical, halogenated agent, and dry powder in mild steel, brass, or aluminum shells
What is included
  • Full discharge and pre-test visual inspection
  • Hydrostatic pressure test to NFPA 10 spec
  • Cylinder condemned if it fails, no exceptions
  • Recharge and reassembly if cylinder passes
  • Test date stamped on cylinder collar
  • NFPA 10 compliant documentation for your compliance file
